New Realities in the Job Market

by Tony Hawk

Recent indicators suggest there are a lot of jobs out there, but they seem to be harder for employers to fill.  The reason: employers are searching for the “Purple Squirrel" or that rare employee who has all the skills wrapped up in a single package.

Through this recession, employers have learned they can actually get more productivity out of fewer people.  Reports that productivity has increased 3.5% in the last year and is the best it has been in six years have changed  employers' expectations.

What does this mean for you who are in a job search or considering a career transition?

  • First, don’t be surprised if you are no longer qualified for the position you last held.  Employers are demanding more from everyone.
  • It is critical for you to review you resume and job history to ensure that you are truly highlighting all your strengths  and the broad range of your accomplishments.
  • No longer is it good enough to describe your job history as an expert in a single category or skill set.  If you have worked on cross functional projects, it is critical that your diverse skills, adaptability and flexibility are highlighted.
  • You will want to showcase  all your training, not just the training required for your last position.
  • It is also important for you to send a well crafted cover letter with your resume that demonstrates how your background and experience will help the hiring manager address particular needs of the organization.
